Take the train from Zurich Airport to Zürich Hauptbahnhof for the fastest and simplest city-centre transfer. Choose tram 10 when your accommodation lies along its route or you prefer a street-level journey. Use an official airport taxi when door-to-door convenience matters more than cost.
Zurich Airport is close to the city, but “city centre” is not one stop. A hotel beside the main station creates a different decision from one near ETH, the university area or a tram stop north of the old town. Pick the route for your final address, luggage and arrival time.
Zurich Airport transfer options at a glance
| Option | Typical official journey time | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train or S-Bahn | About 10–15 minutes to Zürich HB | Most travellers, central hotels and onward rail connections | Final walk or local connection may still be needed |
| Tram 10 | About 35 minutes to Zürich HB | Stops along the route, ETH/university side and travellers who prefer street level | Much slower to the main station |
| Official airport taxi | Traffic-dependent | Heavy luggage, groups, limited mobility or a direct hotel arrival | Far more expensive than public transport |
The official tourism page currently lists the same public-transport fare for the airport-to-centre train and tram: CHF 7 for a single trip and CHF 14 for a 24-hour pass. These are time-sensitive figures accessed on 8 October 2026, so confirm the current fare before buying.
Train: the best default for most arrivals
Zurich Airport’s railway station is below Airport Shopping. Follow the rail signs after customs rather than leaving the terminal for the road. The airport says trains leave for Zürich Hauptbahnhof about every 10 minutes and take around 15 minutes; Zurich Tourism gives a 10–15 minute range, with services usually every 5–10 minutes between approximately 05:00 and midnight.

You do not need a special airport express. S-Bahn and other trains serve Zürich HB, and the next useful departure is normally the sensible choice. Check the live departure board because platform, stopping pattern and engineering work can change.
Choose the train if
- your hotel is near Zürich Hauptbahnhof, Bahnhofstrasse or the old town;
- you have an onward train to another Swiss city;
- you want the shortest predictable journey;
- you are comfortable making one final tram or walking connection.
The train’s real trade-off
The rail journey is short, but the total transfer includes walking through the airport, finding the platform, waiting and reaching the hotel from Zürich HB. A property described as “central Zurich” can still be inconvenient from the main station. Map the final segment before choosing.
Tram 10: slower, but useful for the right address
Tram 10 links the airport with Zürich Hauptbahnhof in roughly 35 minutes. It passes the university and ETH area, so it can be more direct than travelling to the main station and doubling back. The journey also stays above ground, which some travellers find easier with a simple stop-to-stop route.

Do not choose tram 10 because it looks more local if your destination is beside Zürich HB. The train is usually much faster. Choose the tram because a specific stop works for your accommodation or because a slower street-level arrival suits your plans.
Choose tram 10 if
- your hotel or apartment is close to a tram 10 stop;
- you are heading toward the university or ETH side of central Zurich;
- you prefer to avoid the rail-station transfer environment;
- you are not in a hurry and want to see more of the city on arrival.
Check the exact stop
Search the accommodation address in the current ZVV or SBB journey planner. A single direct tram can beat a faster train plus an awkward connection, but only when the stop is genuinely close to your door.
Taxi: pay more for a direct arrival
Zurich Airport recommends using vehicles marked “Airport Taxi”. The ranks are on the inner curbside lanes at Arrivals 1 and 2. The airport currently estimates around CHF 65 to Zurich city centre, while the final total and journey time depend on the address, traffic, luggage and applicable charges.

A taxi is rarely the best value for one light-travelling passenger going to the main station. It becomes more reasonable for a group sharing the fare, travellers with several large bags, an address that requires multiple public-transport changes, or someone who needs the simplest curb-to-door route.
Choose an official airport taxi if
- managing luggage through stations would be difficult;
- several travellers can share the cost;
- your accommodation is poorly connected from Zürich HB;
- a direct, low-navigation arrival is the priority.
Avoid uncertain pickups
Use the signed airport taxi rank or a clearly identified pre-booked provider. Do not accept an unsolicited ride offer in the terminal. This is a practical way to keep the pickup point, vehicle and payment process clear without making broader safety claims.
Is the Zürich Card worth using for the airport transfer?
The Zürich Card includes the transfer between Zurich Airport and the city as well as public transport within its covered zones. It can be useful when you will also use city transport and included attractions during the card’s validity.
Do not buy it only because an airport transfer is included. Compare the current card price with the official single fare and the rest of your actual itinerary. If you buy a physical card, follow the official validation instructions before the first trip; app-based products use the displayed digital ticket. Terms can change, so confirm them on the official page.
What to do after baggage reclaim
- Check your hotel address. Identify the nearest useful stop, not just the neighbourhood name.
- Open the live journey planner. Compare the next train and tram 10 with the final walking time.
- Buy the correct public-transport product. Use the airport machine, official app or staffed sales point and confirm validity before boarding.
- Follow mode-specific signs. The rail station is below Airport Shopping; tram and taxi signs lead outside toward their designated stops.
- Keep the ticket available. Swiss public transport uses inspection rather than a barrier at every trip.
Late arrivals, early departures and disruption
Zurich Tourism says regular airport-to-city trains generally run from about 05:00 to midnight, but this is not a guarantee for a particular date. Weekend, overnight and engineering patterns can differ. Check the live timetable before the travel day and again after landing.
If the last convenient public-transport option has gone, compare the official taxi rank with any pre-booked service you already arranged. Do not assume a scheduled landing time equals the time you will reach the station; baggage and border formalities can add uncertainty.
Which option should you choose?
Solo traveller or couple near the main station
Take the train. It is fast, frequent and usually the simplest value decision.
Hotel near ETH, the university area or a direct tram 10 stop
Compare the live routes. Tram 10 may remove a change or backtrack even though it takes longer to reach Zürich HB.
Family or group with several bags
Compare the combined public-transport fare with the official taxi estimate. A taxi can make practical sense when divided among several people and when the hotel is not beside a direct stop.
Onward travel beyond Zurich
Use the airport railway station and search the full journey. Many Swiss destinations can be reached without first treating Zürich HB as a separate transfer.
The practical answer
Train first, tram for a route-specific advantage, taxi for door-to-door simplicity. Check the final hotel segment and live timetable before buying. That small step matters more than choosing by headline journey time alone.
