Copenhagen Airport is unusually close to the city, but the best transfer still depends on where you are sleeping. Take the M2 metro for Kongens Nytorv, Nørreport or an easy metro connection; take the train for Copenhagen Central Station and hotels around Tivoli or Vesterbro; use a taxi when door-to-door travel matters more than price. The bus is mainly useful when its route fits an address that rail does not serve directly.

This guide compares the options by final stop, luggage, arrival time and ticket choice. Timetables, fares and planned works can change, so check your exact journey with the official planner before leaving the terminal.

Quick decision: which airport transfer should you take?

Metro: the simplest default for the historic centre, especially Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport.

Train: the most direct choice for København H, Tivoli, the western side of the centre and onward rail travel.

Bus: an address-specific option when the journey planner shows a stop closer to your accommodation.

Taxi: best for heavy luggage, reduced mobility, a tired family or a door-to-door arrival.

If you have not chosen an area yet, compare the transfer with your hotel’s actual address. Copenhagen Central Station and Nørreport are both described as “central”, but they serve different parts of the city. A fast airport ride can still become awkward if it leaves you with a long cobbled walk or an unnecessary change.

Metro: best for Kongens Nytorv, Nørreport and metro connections

The airport metro station is connected directly to Terminal 3. The M2 runs from the airport toward central Copenhagen, stopping at Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport before continuing west. Copenhagen Airport currently says services run every 4–6 minutes during the day and evening and every 15–20 minutes at night. It quotes about 15 minutes between the airport and Nørreport; the Metro operator quotes about 14 minutes to central Copenhagen.

Choose the metro when your hotel is near Kongens Nytorv, Nyhavn, Strøget, Nørreport or a simple connection on the wider metro network. It is frequent, does not depend on road traffic and avoids the need to target a particular departure. The airport station also has two lifts, which helps with wheeled luggage, although the walk after your city stop still matters.

The trade-off is destination. The airport line does not take the most direct path to every hotel near Copenhagen Central Station. If your accommodation is around Tivoli, the Meatpacking District or the southern end of Vesterbro, compare the train before automatically following the metro signs.

Who should choose the metro?

It suits solo travellers, couples and light packers heading to the eastern or northern side of the centre. It is also the easiest option when you want a frequent service and do not want to wait for a specific train. Before boarding, search the full hotel address in Rejseplanen rather than using “city centre” as the destination.

Train: best for Copenhagen Central Station and onward rail

Trains link the airport with central Copenhagen from the Terminal 3 station. Copenhagen Airport directs city-bound passengers to tracks 1 and 2, while live screens show the current platform and departure. For accommodation near København H, Tivoli, City Hall Square’s western side or Vesterbro, the train often gives the cleanest arrival.

The train also makes sense when Copenhagen is a stop rather than the end of your journey. DSB presents the airport rail connection as a practical route toward other Danish cities, and the airport station also serves trains toward Sweden. Check the exact service because a regional or intercity train’s stopping pattern may not match the next train displayed.

Buy a valid ticket before boarding. Copenhagen Airport explicitly warns that tickets are not sold on the train. Machines and the DSB sales point are in Terminal 3, while digital tickets are available through the current official apps. If you have a tight onward connection, leave time to find the correct platform and confirm whether a transfer at København H is required.

Rail platforms at Copenhagen Airport station.
Metro or train for your hotel?

Use the stop nearest the door, not the mode that sounds fastest. A hotel near Nørreport usually favours the metro. A hotel beside København H usually favours the train. Around City Hall Square, either can work: compare the final walk, the weather and whether you would rather change lines or walk several blocks.

If you are continuing to another European city after Copenhagen, our Berlin neighbourhood guide and two-day Munich itinerary can help shape the next stop.

Bus: useful when the route matches your exact address

Airport buses are part of Copenhagen’s integrated public-transport network, but they are rarely the universal first choice for a central hotel. Their advantage is geographic: a bus may reduce the final walk or avoid a rail change for a particular street. Their disadvantages are traffic exposure, more stops and a route that may be less intuitive after a flight.

Enter the accommodation address and arrival time in Rejseplanen. If the planner offers a bus with a clearly better door-to-door journey, it can be the right answer. If the difference is small, metro or train is usually easier because Terminal 3 signage leads directly to both systems.

Taxi: best for door-to-door convenience

The official taxi pick-up rank is immediately outside Terminal 3. A taxi removes the final station-to-hotel walk and is the least complicated option with bulky luggage, a stroller, limited mobility or passengers who are exhausted after a long journey. It can also make sense for a group when convenience matters and the fare is shared.

The trade-offs are cost and traffic. Copenhagen Airport says taxi companies must display their prices, tips are included and credit-card payment is normally available. It also notes that some operators may add a charge for departures from the airport. Ask for the expected fare before the ride starts and use the official rank rather than accepting an unsolicited approach inside the terminal.

A taxi is not automatically faster at every time of day. Rail travel avoids road congestion, while a car’s advantage is the direct final leg. The further your hotel is from a useful station, the stronger the taxi case becomes.

The taxi rank outside Copenhagen Airport.
How Copenhagen airport tickets work

Copenhagen’s bus, train and metro services share a zone-based ticket system. A ticket that covers the required zones can be used on the included public-transport modes for its stated validity period. That means you normally choose the journey and zones, rather than buying separate airport-branded metro and train tickets.

Single ticket or City Pass?

A single ticket is the practical choice when the airport transfer is one of only a few public-transport trips. DSB says City Pass Small covers zones 1–4, including the airport and central Copenhagen, with validity options from 24 to 120 hours. The pass becomes more relevant when you expect to use public transport repeatedly after checking in.

Do not buy a pass simply because it includes the airport. Compare the current price with your planned journeys. Copenhagen is compact enough that many visitors walk extensively once they reach their chosen neighbourhood. For a short visit, your airport transfer plus one or two local rides may cost less than unlimited travel.

Where to buy

Ticket machines are available at metro and DSB stations, and Terminal 3 has ticket facilities. The current official digital option is Rejsebillet; Din Offentlige Transport says the former DOT Tickets app has closed. Rejsekort app offers check-in and check-out travel. Whichever method you use, make sure the ticket is active before boarding and that your phone has enough battery to display it during inspection.

Fares and app arrangements can change. Use Rejseplanen to check the current route, zones, disruptions and price for your travel date.

What to do after a late arrival

The metro runs overnight, but less frequently than during the day. A service that is normally simple can also be affected by planned maintenance. Check the live journey shortly before landing, especially after midnight. If your hotel reception closes, solve that separately: confirm the property’s late check-in process before choosing the transfer.

For a late arrival with light luggage, the metro may still be the easiest route. For an address beside Copenhagen Central, compare the next train with the metro plus a change. When the wait, final walk or check-in deadline becomes awkward, use the official taxi rank.

Accessibility and luggage

The airport metro station has lifts, and Terminal 3 connects directly with the metro and rail area. Step-free infrastructure does not guarantee that the entire trip to your room is effortless: lifts can be temporarily unavailable, and the final streets may be uneven. Check the exact station and hotel entrance if step-free access is essential.

With one rolling suitcase, both metro and train are straightforward for most travellers. With several large bags, a stroller or mobility equipment, compare the complete route, including changes and walking distance. A taxi can be the sensible choice even when public transport is cheaper.

A simple arrival plan

Save the full accommodation address, not only the hotel name.

Check Rejseplanen after landing for current departures and disruptions.

Choose metro for Kongens Nytorv or Nørreport; choose train for København H unless the live planner shows a better route.

Buy or activate the correct ticket before boarding.

Keep the ticket available until the journey is complete.

If luggage, mobility or a late check-in makes the final leg difficult, use the official Terminal 3 taxi rank.
